The South of Portugal is an area of the country I’d been dreaming of visiting for quite some time. With it’s rocky coastline and beautiful coastlines, it’s a calming place to visit. Part of the appeal was discovering the many small villages nestled along the coast, each one with their own unique character. One such village is Aljezur.
To get there, you can hop on a bus from Portimão heading to Aljezur (less than three hours) or drive (less than two hours). On your way, you’ll pass through olive groves and head through tiny villages tucked in between the mountains. Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a typical fishing village atmosphere: small stone houses with red-tile roofs line the shore and fishermen unload their morning catch right onto the beach.
Migrating birds are common sights in this region during spring and fall, making it a popular destination for bird watchers. There are also plenty of water activities to enjoy; if it’s windy or sandy, try surfing or kite surfing. If you prefer calmer waters, take advantage of the opportunity to explore the area by boat or kayak along its many rocky coves and inlets.
